I don’t really have much to say except…
1. Barack Obama > Hillary Clinton – So, Barack’s won the nomination. I suppose I should be more enthused than I am. Well, when I really think about how historic a moment it is, I can understand the hullabaloo. I mean, what if you were a five year old? I can’t imagine what it would be like to grow up with a Black president.
But for the most part, I’m completely turned off to anything that has to do with the election for awhile, until stuff really gets down to the wire. I mean, we all know what’s going to happen in the next few months…Barack’s camp will say McCain is too old and that he will be George Bush, III. McCain’s camp will say that Barack’s promise of “change” holds no weight and that he has no experience…and if that doesn’t seem to work, they will surely spew whatever dirt they can find his way. Wake me up in October.
2. Los Angeles Lakers > Boston Celtics – This is going to be epic. Enough said.
3. Wale’s Mixtape About Nothing > Lil’ Wayne’s Tha Carter 3 – If it weren’t for my penchant for catchy pop-R&B tunes– a la “Comfortable” and “Tie My Hands”, featuring Babyface and Robin Thicke, respectively– I really would not be playing TC3. “Dr. Carter” is the only gem on here, refreshingly creative and real: “And that was called recyclin’…some say it’s bitin’, but I say it’s enlightenin’“.
For something as obsessively anticipated as this record was, pshhhhhh, I would want my money back…if I had paid for it. I mean, it’s not a bad album, per se. It’s got a bunch of catchy tunes, some slick lines here and there, and the club joints are quiiite fly (my roommate blasts “Lollipop” all day everyday, and I’m still not sick of it). But lyrically, and holistically, the man does not deliver. One asinine reporter wrote that it’s the “first pure hiphop classic of 2008″– are you kidding? A friend of mine put it aptly when he said, “I will not be playing this come November.”
The other Mr. Carter outshines him on their collabo…And what happened to the version of “La La La” released last summer? There’s nothing on this disc that goes as hard as “I’m Me” from The Leak released at the end of last year (which I think was on Weezyaveli under a different title, no?)…I was itchhhhing for a classic verse or something as instantly infectious as “I Feel Like Dying” to smasshhhhhh on all the Weezy haters, but I was disappointed. Oh well.
Am I the only one who thinks the album art is better than the album?
Now I don’t have much room to talk about how fly Wale’s latest tape is, but trust me…it’s SO FLY. This release, unlike TC3, certainly lives up to the hype…he is a monster on the mic, whether he’s talking about women (”The Manipulation”…though I can’t tell if he’s serious), freestyling (”Wale rap like he read a thesaurus / I’m the reason the atheists could scream for the Lord…y’all ni**as in the closet like priests at confession / my words touch youth like priests that confessin’” ), or tackling issues of white supremacy (”The Kramer” – favorite track on the tape). And I could go on naming why every other track is ridiculous, but I won’t. Dude is one of the few emcees these days with skills that more than match his swag, and he has so much impeccable material out already– I can’t wait until his first release!
Now I wish I had watched more Seinfeld back in the day to better understand everything he did with it as a concept album. Wait, it’s not even an album…ridiculous.
4. Cannonball Adderley’s solo on “Flamenco Sketches” > all of the above – Yo, I wish I could read music…this has been stuck in my head all day…no dis to Wale.
5. Los Angeles > everywhere else – It’s good to be home.
EDIT (June 16, 2008): So I just found out that I was missing a track from the leak of TCIII that I received. …”Misunderstood.” The one track missing is the one where he samples my girlllllll!!!! I guess that’s what I get for not purchasing the album. “They’d rather speculate before they informate” – hahahaha…I can’t lie though, the album has certainly grown on me since I wrote this post.

Agreed on all counts…saying that Obama>Hillary may be true but so is saying Bert>Ernie…at the end of day you can argue it til you’re blue in the face but they’re more or less exactly the same expect one happens to be orange (black).
Considering my lifelong crush on Kobe (use to rock the fro just like my boy) I would have to agree that the Lakers (Kobe and those other guys)>Boston.
As someone who can read music and play alto sax (which Cannonball played) it really doesn’t matter having the sheet music…I have a basketball in my backyard and some shorts…but I still can’t dunk from the foul line.
Either way funny post and on that note:

Bert had a stick up his ass.
Comment by Paul June 5, 2008 @ 9:21 amI can only say I agree with 4.
1. Sure, I agree its historic that a Black man is the nominee and all that. But look at it this way: when Wilson Goode became the first Black mayor of Philadelphia I know for a fact that people in this city considered it similarly historic. Then he dropped a bomb on a house full of Black people…Obama’s election will not magically make the world a better place, and the fact that he is Black does not mean he won’t make decisions in office with his eye first towards satisfying the big business backers of the Democratic party.
2. I am still bitter from the 2001 finals. (In fact, Allen Iverson draining that shot from the right wing in the clutch and proceeding to STEP OVER Tyrone Lue was a formative moment in my childhood…we miss you A.I.!) So, I cannot now, nor will I ever support the Lakers.
Boston’s extraordinary luck in all things sport has spawned an horribly obnoxious fanbase. The recent Superbowl loss shut them the hell up and made me feel really good — I have been chasing that feeling ever since.
In this case of these finals though, I will have to take the “I hope they both lose” approach.
3. I will withhold judgment until I have actually heard both.
4. No disagreements. Adderley’s work with the incredible Joe Zawinul (R.I.P.) is some of my favorite.
5. WRONG! The best city in the known universe is Philadelphia haha.
Great post!
Comment by Eric June 5, 2008 @ 10:36 amAnd for the record for people new to the blog, regarding the 1st point, I do not support Clinton nor McCain.
If Eugene Debs came back from the dead I would gladly vote for him.
Comment by Eric June 5, 2008 @ 10:59 am1. By Barack > Hillary, I was only referring to the fact that he won the nomination…well actually, I have to admit, I trust Barack a bit more than I do Hillary so I guess in my eyes Barack seems marginally > Hillary.
2. Eric: Lakers STEPPING OVER the 6ers in 5 games > any step AI has ever taken
4. Paul: You can’t dunk from the foul line, and you call yourself a basketball fan??? Get on my level yo…
Comment by iamchloe June 5, 2008 @ 12:38 pmAlright, let me see if I can explain this to you. How many major sports championships has LA had since 1983? More than 0. How many major sports championships has LA had since you have been alive? More than 0 again. Now, how many major sports championships has Philadelphia had since 1983? ZERO.
Thus, when the surprising 2001 Philadelphia 76ers led by the electrifying Allen Iverson marched their way into the finals–where they were widely expected to be swept–and stole the first game from the Kobe-Shaq Lakers dynasty in an OT thriller, naturally, the city was ecstatic.
Even though we knew we would be lucky to win another (which we did not) this win was one of the high water marks in Philadelphia sports history since 1983 and certainly the best Philadelphia sports memory I have. In Philadelphia we are forced to celebrate such small victories because they are, after all, all we’ve got.
You, on the other hand, are spoiled and will never be able to understand the pain and agony that go hand-in-hand with rooting for Philadelphia teams. In fact, I think it is this fact that goes a long way towards explaining why we are such a miserable, terrible people.
Comment by Eric June 5, 2008 @ 1:34 pmChloe: Wale is the man! And the new mixtape (what I’ve heard of it) is electric! And I think Wayne’s album art is fly (especially the baby’s tattoos). I do, however, blast one or two songs from the album on the regular, so I can’t really hate on it.
Eric: I am mad at you for comparing Barack Obama to Wilson Goode (he was an idiot!).
I feel you, though, on the tortured Philadelphia fan tip. Philly teams pretty much suck (most of the time). I was on board with the Eagles for quite quite a while actually… but after the T.O. fiasco I have since decided to root for the Cowboys (just to be obnoxious).
Paul: I am glad you corrected your statement because Bert was whack. He was way too cynical and always bringing Ernie down. I used to find myself thinking, “Damn, Bert! Can Ernie live?” Furthermore, I had a pretty intense argument with one of my classmates in grade school, sparked by Burt’s continued use of “fishes” instead of “fish”. A kid swore on his little life that “fishes” was the correct plural for fish because he saw it on Sesame Street and only a “dumb girl” would think “fish” could mean more than one fish (an argument about which I am still a little bitter).
Comment by Cami June 5, 2008 @ 3:32 pmi dont know about this wale album yet
Comment by Witz June 5, 2008 @ 3:44 pmi have it but can hardly even get through it
i dug a bunch of tracks off 100 miles and running but then again same thing where a bunch of the songs had a sound that for whatever reason the combination of his voice and the beat make me want to turn it off immediately
i will give it a chance though because theres no doubt hes talented
hold on i retract my last statement
Comment by Witz June 5, 2008 @ 3:52 pmim just hating because he did a mixtape about seinfeld haha most of his shit is hot but sometimes he DOES sound awkard (roc boys freestyle) its like are you hearing yourself, sounding a little forced
but ” basically im lindros FLYER THAN THE REST OF THEM”
Cami:
I really prefer not to talk about how tortured I am as a Philadelphia fan because, as you can see, it brings out a side of me that I prefer to keep hidden away. Still, your turncoatism is downright disgraceful and will not be tolerated. Moreover, the fact that you can speak about it so flippantly reflects the fact that you never really cared about Philadelphia sports in the first place. You, not having spent your entire life in Philadelphia, don’t know what its like to have NO CHOICE but to root for Philly teams. If I decided to switch to the Cowboys on a whim, I would be killed by my Philadelphia brethren, literally. Dead. haha
Regarding Wilson Goode: I draw the comparison not to make a comment on Goode’s intelligence relative to that of Obama. I agree that Obama is probably a good bit smarter than Goode. I tend to think, however, that intelligence has very little bearing on the course executive governance takes. I merely make the comparison because it is a useful example of how the “first Black (insert executive elective office of any level here)” does not mean “progress.” I mean, the MOVE bombing may have been a direct result of Goode’s stupidity (most people could have probably foreseen that dropping a bomb in a residential neighborhood was not the brightest of ideas), but the fact that conditions for the city’s poor/minority residents did not improve are related to deeper structural issues and also the nature of Goode’s governing regime. Similarly, Obama’s neo-liberal agenda does not get at these structural roots of inequality.
Comment by Eric June 5, 2008 @ 4:57 pmHaha, I’ve never heard anyone comment negatively on his flow…I personally love the Roc Boys freestyle, but that’s an interesting take…
Damn Eric, is it that serious? Lol…
I’ve actually been listening to TC3 a lot since I wrote this post. “3Peat” and “Shoot Me Down” are fire. Other than that though, my sentiments still stand…
Comment by iamchloe June 6, 2008 @ 2:00 pmYes, it is. It is that serious. lol. Going from Eagles to Cowboys is like the cardinal sin of Philadelphia sports fanaticism. I don’t make the rules, I just follow them.
Comment by Eric June 6, 2008 @ 4:24 pmYea I agree the Carter 3 could have been way better but the man had so many of his songs leaked it’s not surprising he has some songs I could do without i.e. (Got Money, Phone Home). But for real tho Weezy easily one of the most talented dudes in the game, i say again hes puttin out so much material that he’s obviously gonna wwrite some wack shit every once in a while (oops did i say write cause he doesnt do write any of his shit) give the boy a break man. Also Clay, for all these hip hop posts why not one about Joe Buddens man…mood muzik 3 came out a couple months ago…possibly the most fire mixtape ive ever heard…and that includes weezys carter 3 sessions and the whole drought series…
ride or die or do both nigga, ride to the death,
